Choosing a diamond sharpening stone is less about the brand and more about matching grit ranges to your steel and task. In this guide, Engineer Yanchi Li (Engineer Yanchi Li, Ruimo Tech) breaks down the Sy Tools D series: what is in the lineup, how the models differ, and how to build a set for your kitchen or knife work.

What the Sy Tools D series is

The Sy Tools D series are monocrystalline diamond stones on a rigid backing. Unlike water stones they need no soaking, hold their geometry, and work equally on hard Japanese steels (60+ HRC) and softer European steels. The lineup includes D, KD, LVD, RO, SU, TTD, WWD, FW — each with its own grit range and purpose.

Exact grit values are listed on each product page — Sy Tools' range updates, and specific figures may change (status «to be verified» on some SKUs). Tell us your use case and we will help you build a set.

How to choose grit: quick map

Engineer Yanchi Li's tip: for a home kitchen, three steps are enough — coarse D, medium RO, finish LVD. Add other D models only for specific tasks (long blades, axes, collectible Japanese knives).

How to build a D-series set (steps)

  1. Assess your knives: Japanese (hard) or European (soft), blade length.
  2. Pick a base: D for recovery or RO for daily upkeep.
  3. Add a finish: LVD or SU for a shaving edge.
  4. Long blades → WWD; axes/machetes → TTD.
  5. Lock the angle with the Sy Tools T05-AMZ regulator so you don't drift.

Caring for Sy Tools D stones

After use, rinse with water and a soft brush, dry, and store in a dry place. No solvents needed. With normal care the Sy Tools diamond coating lasts a long time.
