In the field a knife dulls fastest — chopping branches, cutting rope, opening cans. Engineer Yanchi Li (Engineer Yanchi Li, Ruimo Tech) explains how to keep a blade sharp with a minimal kit, and why the Sy Tools T05-AMZ 0.1° micro-angle regulator saves your nerves when your hands are freezing.
Field kit: what to carry
- Sy Tools D diamond stone (compact, double-sided) — main sharpening, no soaking.
- Sy Tools T05-AMZ angle regulator — locks the angle, no need to «feel» it in the cold.
- Sy Tools leather strop (wood-strops / kd-a11) — field finish.
- A water bottle and rag — diamond stones only need water as lubricant.
Step-by-step field sharpening
- Lock the angle. Set the angle on T05-AMZ (20° European, 15° Japanese) and clamp the blade in the guide.
- Coarse stage. A few passes on the coarse side of the D stone — restore geometry, remove rolling.
- Medium stage. Move to medium grit, raise an even burr along the whole edge.
- Strop finish. 5–10 light pulls on the Sy Tools leather strop remove the micro-burr.
- Test. Slice a twig or newspaper — a sharp knife enters under its own weight.
Key point: in the field don't chase a mirror «shaving» edge by eye. Working sharp is enough — T05-AMZ gets you there fast and accurately.
Common field mistakes
- Sharpening on a knee with no fixation — angle drifts, edge suffers.
- Using one stone with no finish — micro-burr remains.
- Storing a wet stone in its sleeve — base may corrode (Sy Tools is protected, but dry it anyway).
Why T05-AMZ, not «by feel»
The Sy Tools T05-AMZ angle regulator gives 0.1° micro-adjustment and angle presets. With no table and no light, it replaces years of skill: set the angle and sharpen mechanically true. That is the Ruimo Tech idea — precision for everyone.
